THE HOLDERNESS AND WOLDS FOODBANK
The Holderness and Wolds Foodbank is part of a national network of foodbanks operating through the Trussell Trust. There are over 400 foodbanks active in the UK (April 2013). The Holderness and Wolds Foodbank is a co-operation between churches in Hornsea and district, and is based alongside St Nicholas' Church, within the Parish Hall. The Wolds Foodbank is a subsidiary outpost at All Saints' Church, Driffield and was launched on September 12th 2013. Foodbanks engage the whole community in providing food to local people going hungry.
How it works
The ‘Holderness and Wolds foodbank' collects and banks, (stores), food donated by the community. The food can be drawn on by people in crisis. It is a simple and unique concept designed to help individuals in crisis by providing free emergency food for three days (10 balanced meals). Three days is the period assessed as the minimum time it takes for the appropriate agencies to be in a position to assist someone in need. This period can be extended if necessary. We collect food from the public at supermarkets, from churches and through local groups and schools, and this is ‘banked' in a store.
Food is given out as a result of referrals from registered Care Professionals such as Social Services, Health Visitors, Probation Officers, Church Pastoral Workers, schools and others working in the front line of poverty. They issue food vouchers to people in need.
Vouchers redeemable at the Driffield branch of the Holderness and Wolds Foodbank distribution centre, (All Saint's Church), allow clients to exchange their voucher for 3 days of tinned and dry food for their family. This is our preferred way because it enables us to come alongside those in need, offer them a cup of tea or coffee, provide a safe non-judgmental place in which to sit and be heard, and to find out about other possible areas of help.
The Foodbank is staffed entirely by volunteers but is governed by a strict confidentiality culture. In addition, the Trussell Trust is registered with the Data Protection Agency.
The foodbank is open Monday: 1.30pm to 3.00pm and Thursday: 2.00pm to 4.00pm
